Darkspore levels were designed to have a blend of familiarity and surprise with repeat play-throughs due to the way the levels load. I came online at Maxis about the same time as the layering technology so it was the perfect way to get up to speed on the levels that mostly already existed by this point. I would devise multiple versions for the different aspects of the design. Then, when loading levels it would choose one of the destructible layers, one of the hidden object layers, one of the health powerup layers, et cetera, et cetera.
